I have been thinking lately, that I should explain why I started a blog. It actually came as a surprise to me that I even started one! There are a lot of reasons why I did it. And people ask me, “Why start a blog?” So I’ll explain.

WHY START A BLOG?
BECAUSE I’M AN INTROVERT
I am an introvert. An INFJ personality to be exact. Recently, I also learned I am a HSP (highly sensitive person.) It basically means that even though I love hanging out with my friends and family, at some point I need to leave and be alone. That way I can recuperate and get my energy back.
Despite my need to regain my energy, I have a very difficult time doing nothing at home. I usually don’t like to watch TV. I would rather read a book or cuddle with my dog. However, sometimes I need more to do than just sit at home. When I am sitting at home and don’t have much to do, I get pretty bored. I end up thinking I am not doing anything productive, my life is not productive, and I am so bored! Which is usually false thinking btw. I just don’t know how to properly relax and do nothing! (Don’t worry, I’m learning.) My hubby told me I need to find a hobby to do at home. We can’t just travel every day that we have off of work. And I need to learn how to relax at home. So for me, to start a blog meant I could be at home, and not feel like I had nothing to do. It would also mean I could start a new hobby.
A NEW HOBBY
I love to travel. If you don’t believe me, read my other blog posts, How To Find Fall In Southern California, How To See Boston In A Day, How To See Yosemite National Park In 3 Days, Weekend Camping In Joshua Tree, etc. However, I cannot travel all the time like I want. In order to travel, you have to have money. It’s pretty difficult to travel without money. And in order to get money, I have to work. I love my job as a NICU nurse. However, this also means I can’t travel all the time as a hobby.
My husband and I have also worked extremely hard to pay off all of our student loan debt! Which means for the past 4 years, we have not had tons of extra money to just go explore on our days off like I would like to do. That means I have days off with nothing to do because I am saving money for vacations!
So, in order to combat this boredom at home, I decided to start a blog. Writing is something I have always been pretty good at. During high school, however, I did not like writing because those were assignments and usually meant “work.” I usually had to write about things I was uninterested in. But when you write about things that you love, it’s so fun and easy! The words just tend to flow and I can be as creative as I want. A blog allows me to not be tied down to an assignment. Rather, it allows me to be creative and write about my passions.
SHARE MY PASSIONS
When I was younger, I did not think I had any passions. I thought I was pretty normal and just liked what other people liked. However, once I started to explore my personality and grow into who I really am, I found out I have a lot of passions. And, once I found these passions, I had a hard time knowing what to do about them. I found advice online, “Start a blog and write about your passion.” That is one reason I started my blog. I wanted to start writing. Maybe writing would turn into a passion for me, and not just a hobby.
One of the biggest passions that I have is budgeting, getting out of debt, and showing other people how to do it as well. B and I paid off $166k in student loan debt. It was extremely difficult to stay disciplined and pay it all off within 4 years. However, we did it! And I want to tell people how! I want them to know it’s possible and they can do it too! This is one of the main reasons I HAD to start a blog. So many people asked me how we were able to do it! How in the heck were we able to pay off so much debt?! Using the debt snowball, the envelope system, cash, a budget; I wanted people to know how paying off debt and becoming debt free completely changed our lives!
B and I love sharing Dave Ramsey’s Debt Free Principles with people who are eager to learn. I really like doing budgets and “spending plans” because it really does allow you to keep track of your money. It has allowed B and I to stop feeling guilty for spending money on vacations because now we budget for it! If you ever have questions about getting out of debt, learning how to make a budget, etc. don’t be afraid to ask in the comments or email me! I would love to help out!
Travel and Outdoor Adventures!
I am also passionate about traveling and exploring new places to see the beauty of God in a real way. Getting outside, exploring nature, and having adventures with friends and family builds beautiful memories. I would much rather go camping and build memories with my tribe than fill my house with unnecessary junk. By writing about how easy it is to camp and travel on my blog, I hope to inspire more people to get outside, make memories and explore God’s beauty. It has been one of the greatest joys of my life! Seriously though, it’s so easy and not that expensive! See my post about How To See Yosemite National Park in a weekend. It cost us less than $150 including travel expenses, lodging, food and everything. It’s so possible!
I have a passion to be a great NICU nurse. I love my preemie babies. You can see a letter I wrote to my preemie babies here. Warning, may bring tears and tissues! So, sometimes writing about my life as a nurse helps me decompress from work life. It is also helpful for the general public to know a little more about nurses and how much we do for our patients. Through my blog, I am able to show people how much we care about them and what exactly our job entails.
In my life, I have been taught, even if you are scared or anxious, do it anyway. I love challenging things, like reading massively long books, or going snorkeling when I am kind of afraid of the ocean. So when I started thinking of how to start a blog, it was a little scary. There are so many articles out there trying to tell you the right way to do it. They tell you how to make tons of money and exactly what you need to be writing about. It really was intimidating.
However, I knew I needed a hobby. I knew I needed a creative space to write about my passions. And I needed a place to share with people how we crushed our debt! So, even though it was challenging and scary, I started anyway! I am challenging myself to continue writing for at least one year and see if anything comes from it. To be honest, I may never make one penny on this blog. (I haven’t so far!) And I may never be internet famous. (That might actually give me a heart attack if I was ever famous!) But, I am challenging myself and doing something I love. That’s enough for me.
SO START A BLOG!
So if you have been thinking about doing it, just start a blog! If you have been scared that it won’t be perfect, it won’t! But that’s okay. Do it because it’s something you think you could love. Do it because you want to challenge yourself. Let me tell you, you should not do it because you are trying to make money. I am pretty sure most bloggers never will actually make a lot of money. But, you should still start a blog and do it for yourself. There are so many blogs out there informing you of how to get started. It’s pretty easy to do.
So that’s all the reasons for me to start a blog. What are your reasons for doing what you love? What are your excuses for delaying something you really want to do? I would encourage you to just go for it! You will never know what could have been, if you don’t try. Tell me why you have started your blog in the comments! Or tell me what you have done that was extremely courageous! I would love to know!
